The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a girl containing several human souls within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips show the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
