Sports Champions Appeal on Iranian Authorities to Prevent Execution of Boxing Star

Over two dozen Olympic medallists, coaches and other global sports figures have endorsed a letter urging a stop to the death penalty of a boxing titleholder and trainer, who is facing execution in the country.

Escalating Worldwide Condemnation

During increasing global condemnation over Iran’s escalating use of capital punishment as a means of suppression, the powerfully expressed letter condemns the Iranian regime's verdict to confirm the capital punishment of the athlete.

Vafaei Sani, three decades old, from the city in north-east Iran, was detained for participating in nationwide protests in two thousand nineteen and charged of backing an dissident organization. He has spent half a decade in incarceration, where he has been mistreated and kept in seclusion.

“Athletics is meant to promote hope, solidarity, and bravery,” the endorsers wrote. “The death penalty of a titleholder for his political views is a blatant attack on these ideals and a caution to any competitor who dares to voice opinions.

Record of Killing Competitors

The letter noted that the athlete's circumstances was part of a pattern and emphasized the nation's past of putting to death sports champions for their beliefs, for example a national team leader, skipper of the football side, and a women's sports leader, captain of the national women’s volleyball team. In 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year-old Iranian sports titleholder, was put to death.

Further supporters to the statement consist of Tracy Edwards, who led the inaugural female-only team in a round-the-world competition and was the initial female to earn a prestigious nautical honor; the former captain of the soccer side Craig Foster; and a sports figure, who was in the Iranian squad for the global tournament.

Apprehension and Unfair Trial

Vafaei Sani was taken into custody in early 2020. The charges against him entailed “spreading corruption on Earth through arson and damage of public property”. His ruling has been annulled twice but on the fourth of October it was confirmed on the third attempt. His trial was criticized as “grossly unfair” by rights defenders and organizations.

Urging to International Body

The appeal to prevent Vafaei Sani’s death sentence follows a previous appeal to the United Nations official for human rights, signed by in excess of a hundred human rights experts and organizations, calling for measures to stop the competitor's capital punishment.

Capital Punishment Escalation

Based on findings, there is an “execution crisis in the country, which has attained shocking dimensions”. In the year 2023, authorities sentenced at least 853 people – a forty-eight percent surge on 2022.
