Britain's Katie Boulter admits she feels she has to "choose between my physical condition and my world standing" as the race persists for a spot in the upcoming January Australian Open primary competition.
While the standard WTA Tour season is completed, there are still ranking points to be earned in Chile, Argentina, Ecuador and France.
The female competitor lineup for the opening Grand Slam of the upcoming season will be based on the global standings of the December cutoff, which could create a challenging situation for players approaching the cut.
Former British leading competitor Boulter suffered an groin injury in her last tournament of the year in Asian venues last period, and is now considering whether to play in the WTA 125 development competition in European venues, the European nation, in the initial week of December.
Boulter's current physical issue, and the fact she would need to achieve at least several wins in the French tournament to improve her ranking, means she may likely ultimately not participating.
In contrast, male players are not facing the equivalent dilemma, as for the first time the men's Australian Open entry list will be drawn up from this week's positions, which is the ATP's formal year-end position determination.
The modification is aimed at preventing competitors from seeking position points during what is fundamentally the off-season.
This period has been a challenging one for Boulter.
She secured just fourteen professional major tournament contests and currently split with instructor Biljana Veselinovic after a three-year working relationship in which she won multiple WTA championships.
"Biljana is an outstanding coach, and an extremely good human as well, which creates situations very difficult," Boulter commented.
The quest for a new trainer is actively progressing, seeking a professional who has high-level background as Boulter continues to think she can be a elite-level player.
"Going forward with a different trainer, an important factor I'm absolutely certain on is that they are going to be someone who has considerable knowledge in how to advance to the very top level of this game," she explained.
"I've been ranked as high as 23 and I am confident I can climb back to that level. I don't believe my performance has disappeared, I feel the reliability should improve.
"My objective is not to be placed 50, 40, thirty, twenty - we've accomplished that. The objective is to be inside the elite group."
