No considering the season, it's constantly open season for scrutiny on the Duchess of Sussex's Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. Reviewers, from seasoned journalists to online pundits, have rarely been so united as when eagerly tearing the lifestyle show's initial installments apart. The general consensus held that a more egregious regal scandal had hardly ever taken place than the now-infamous pretzel-bagging incident.
Currently, like a merry renegade master, she makes a comeback once again with a "Festive Special" (aka a holiday episode). Yet now, it's different. The standard components we've come to expect – meaningless jargon salads, overzealous entertaining – remain, but framed of a Christmas special, the purpose becomes clear. The pieces have fallen perfectly; it's a ideal seasonal storm.
At this stage, Meghan resembles the quirky relative at Christmas celebrations everywhere – providing random tips, and delivering the occasional strange exclamation. ("I love spinach!" … "A tradition has to have a beginning." … "A tree is part of my memory and love of the holiday season.") She's a bit of a character, but her company is customary and strangely comforting. And she appears content; she's inflicting a bit of damage.
She knows her each tiny facial movement, word and glance will be analyzed and criticised, but nonetheless looks relaxed and too blessed to be stressed.
Perhaps this is the first occasion in history where that well-worn saying – "Pay no mind, it's only envy" – might be true. The reason is, in all honesty, all aspects in Meghan's Holiday Celebration truly is charming. Yes, it's all cringily ultra-extra, nonsense and flamboyant – but is that not just what the holiday season is about? And the advice she gives might be laughable, but the example she sets genuinely looks impeccably styled.
Anything she turns her beautifully manicured, diamond-adorned hand to, she pulls off with style. Her culinary efforts looks delicious, the holiday arrangement she makes is gorgeous, her gifts are almost too pretty to open. Not a single thing is ordinary or aesthetically displeasing – even the way she fastens her kitchen garment is creative and fashionable. She doesn't throw a dish in the microwave, it "goes for a spin", and she wraps gift paper like an paper-folding expert. She also seems to be genuinely relishing herself the entire time. How could any skeptical viewer not be won over, filled with holiday spirit and left with a deep longing for handmade crackers or a vegetable display where greens is arranged in the form of a wreath?
Meghan had a career in acting for a living, obviously, but despite that, after the degree of attention she has endured since she met Prince Harry, a theoretical combination of acting royalty would find it hard to appear this naturally. Her decision to alter or even soften her routine, despite it being so relentlessly, internationally ridiculed, is weirdly comforting. In our volatile world, here is one thing we can rely on: Meghan will stay true to form, come what may. We will consistently know where we are with her.
If you're remaining skeptical of her brand, a thought that will certainly come as a relief: you aren't required to. There isn't the draft these days, and should it be reinstated, it would be doubtful to include watching With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration. If, on the other hand, you decide to tune in and are overcome with longing about her picture-perfect Christmas, you can take solace either. Whether you're a royal or a office worker, hardly any child completely grasps the dedication and labor their mum puts in in the holiday season. So you can take heart by envisioning Archie and Lilibet's faces when they reveal a calligraphy note that says, 'I love you because you are brave,' from a handcrafted holiday countdown, in place of a candy.
