Law enforcement officials announced on Monday that they had effectively disrupted a comprehensive scheme to set off IEDs at several locations belonging to two US-based businesses on New Year's Eve in the LA region. This action resulted from the detainment of individuals associated with an radical faction promoting anti-corporate and anti-establishment ideologies.
Four suspects were detained last Friday in the desert region situated east of Los Angeles as they were according to officials practicing their planned attack. Federal attorneys presented aerial surveillance video to the media, that captured the individuals transporting a big dark item to a workspace. Officials emphasized that the apprehensions took place prior to the suspects could construct a working explosive device.
Based on the public legal filing, the four suspects identified are Audrey Illeene Carroll, 30; Page, 32; Dante Gaffield, 24; and Tina Lai, 41. Each of them are said to be from the LA region.
Although officials did not clearly outline a motive, they said the individuals are members of a faction called the Turtle Island Liberation Front. The group reportedly calls for "workers to revolt and combat against capitalism," as per the legal filing.
Each suspect is charged with involve conspiracy and owning a bomb. The government stated that more accusations are expected in the coming weeks.
Officials said that one of the suspects had created a step-by-step scheme last month to target at least five commercial sites across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The intended sites were characterized as "like Amazon" logistical centers.
"The bomb plot was explicit," the attorney stated. "It laid out a precise guide to construct explosive devices … and identified numerous targets across the county of Orange and Los Angeles."
As per the probe and legal filings, the scheme entailed placing bags filled with complex pipe bombs that were set to be exploded all at once at midnight on New Year's Eve at 5 sites. New Year's Eve was identified as an ideal time since the scheme indicated "celebratory explosions will be going off at this time so blast noises will be less likely to be heard."
The eight-page manually written document, named "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," noted that further locations could be included. The sites were categorized as property and operations owned by two different companies involved in operations involving national and international trade.
Court documents also indicated that two members in the collective had planned future strikes focusing on ICE agents agents and vehicles with explosives in 2026. One individual according to the complaint commented that such attacks "would kill some and frighten the rest of them."
The plotting were reportedly planned both at an physical assembly in Los Angeles and through an encrypted digital platform.
Pictures contained in the case file show a remote camp with what investigators said were IED-construction materials scattered on portable tables.
The complaint details that the suspects "carried IED parts to the site, such as assorted sizes of PVC pipes, believed to be a chemical compound, fuel, fuel powder, sulfur powder, and material to be used as igniters, along with other items."
The scheme also included guidance on how to manufacture the bombs and how to prevent leaving evidence that could be linked back to the faction. The accused had recently purchased chemical ingredients and other goods, with buys from major websites.
The FBI intervened last week while the suspects were running through the attack in the isolated region near a desert community. "They had everything they needed to make an operational IED at that place," an official commented.
During carried out searches, authorities allegedly located signs for the Turtle Island Liberation Front at one individual's dwelling that advocated "Death to America", and "Death to ICE". At another individual's residence, police located a copy of the elaborate attack blueprint.
Those arrested were arrested without a struggle. They were due to face a judge in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
