Explosion Takes Three Law Enforcement Officers While Executing Property Removal Operation in the Verona Area

Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and at least 15 people sustained injuries in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a rural property in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the property close to the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

All three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were taken into custody at the scene and another man who fled after the incident was found not long after. The trio have been transported to hospital.

The explosion could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location revealed the structure turned into a mass of wreckage.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to remove the three family members in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The president of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an removal notice due to debts incurred by the siblings.

Negotiators had been assigned to engage the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the property. When the police reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member triggered the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander the police commander stated to news outlets.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our personnel,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also found at the property, the Interior Minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the explosion included eleven more officers of the police force as well as three members of national police and a firefighter.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The official thought the blast had happened on a story above the entrance and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the explosion, he said members had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being turned on”.

Local Response

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed Italian media, noting that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister joined other elected representatives in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
