The first time the Athletic striker played in the UK, an teenage representing the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at Wycombe’s stadium in September 2015, he found the net. The second time he took the field in the country, against the Black Cats following that, he scored. His third outing, against the Citizens six weeks after that, sure enough, he repeated the feat. As he revisited to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at Leigh’s ground in that year, he scored again. A spectacular strike, too. “Truly,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” Thus the club did what was necessary: he was replaced.
“I was furious,” the Athletic striker says, and then he starts laughing. “I’m sure there’s footage. We went to play United and I was pretty good. They didn’t let me play the final 45 minutes: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, you know how it is. No confirmation on the Magpies’ pursuit, but I remember reading about Man United, standard transfer gossip. I have no idea the validity, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other
At the training ground, Bilbao, the early training is set to begin; post-session, the brief trip to the airport and another trip to the UK, now to take on the Magpies in the Champions League on Wednesday. Mentioning that phrase makes Guruzeta smile. It has become a challenging campaign for the club, partially owing to the demands of competing at this level. Losing in stoppage time in the derby on Saturday, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in the continental stage. Yet, consider the broader view, the memorable evenings and those that lie ahead, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation within him.
In the the period since he had come back to Athletic, Guruzeta has been a semi-final participant, prevented from reaching a final at home by United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway accompanied by a huge crowd after lifting the trophy, the first title in four decades. Currently he stands as Athletic’s top scorer in the European competition, where they are unique and making their first appearance in a decade. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.
The player believed it challenging enough just to make the first team and he was right. As the child of the one-time rival player the former professional and a season ticket holder at the club that are now his rivals, Gorka is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that nurtured Mikel Arteta, the former star and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at 17 but after making his senior debut in August 2018, he suffered a ACL injury, the cut, a relegation and a recall before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to experience the peak of the club’s history.
“Entering the youth system thinking you won’t reach the top level but every phase you progress through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … departure is necessary.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in a handful of matches between his first game and February 2019. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I suffered the ACL injury.
“It was a huge blow but I look back on it as something positive because it forced me to alter the outlook. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it’s beneficial. You cultivate routines new to you. It’s not that you don’t look after yourself, but I would go to training and then head home, typical youth behavior. In the facility, you have everything, so utilize it all. Training, prehab. Hit the weights. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. Assuming ankle mobility is good, make it a 12 or a 14. All those ‘silly things’: perform them.
“At the top level you’re going to crash into players who have experienced contact countless occasions. They’re so strong. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. Injuries are inevitable. Current photos and the improvement is clear. Recovery revealed that. Practice concludes, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; the same applies.”
Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed upset in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in the 20-21 campaign, he got three strikes in 40 games. With Amorebieta in the following period, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: loans, terminated contracts. Should you reverse it, dedication, confidence, and should the time come the requirement appears for your role, recall is possible. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, European football, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”
Little surprise he states this is to be enjoyed. Particularly after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was involved suffering. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
