In a major move for their rebuilding roster, the American League club have signed slugger Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a $34 million contract with the accomplished player.
The deal features a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, alongside annual pay of sixteen million for the 2026 season and seventeen million for the following year.
Notably, Murakami's final-year pay can increase based on award achievements in 2026:
The agreement includes that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his permission and makes him a free agent at the conclusion of the contract. Further benefits include a team-provided interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.
As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of 15% triggered salary escalators.
Murakami will become the fourth Japanese to represent the South Siders, joining pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.
Murakami, a left-handed hitter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, joins a emerging core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a 60-102 season, finishing last in the division but showing a significant improvement from the prior campaign.
Having earned Central League MVP honors in consecutive seasons, Murakami is renowned for a record-breaking 2022 season where he belted 56 HRs, breaking the single-season record for a Japanese-born player formerly held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.
His most recent NPB campaign was limited to 56 games due to an side strain. Despite recording 64 times, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 RBIs.
Over his eight-season tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and 977 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Initially playing primarily at first base, he has spent most of his time to third.
Murakami's heroics were on global view during the 2023 WBC. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off double that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a dramatic one-run win. The very next day in the championship game against the Team USA, he blasted a equalizing shot in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's eventual title triumph.
The lefty slugger is scheduled to be officially presented at a introductory event on the coming Monday.
