A bulky bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, garnering a historic bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the market's inaugural auction of the year.
The top offer for the 535-pound fish was placed by the company of a popular sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets across the country and abroad.
"An inaugural tuna signals a prosperous start," commented the company president, a familiar figure at the annual first sale.
Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is renowned for placing record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.
Following the auction, the winner admitted to journalists that he was "astonished at the final price," stating, "I had thought we would be able to acquire it a little cheaper, but the price escalated rapidly."
This latest acquisition surpasses his previous notable purchases:
Despite previously remarking that he thought he "overdid it," he has now managed to shatter his personal record yet again.
The first auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally known for exorbitant prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be available at its restaurants throughout the country.
The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-dawn auctions has become a popular spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.
The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly processed for patrons at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments immediately after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a positive way after eating something so lucky as the year starts," shared one happy patron.
