If Jude Bellingham hopes to force his way into the English top starting eleven, it would be smart to cut out the nonsense. The way he reacted upon realizing that the substitute board was being shown following a night of mixed performance in Tirana fell short of expectations.
"I prefer not to make more out of it but I hold to my words 'conduct is crucial' and respect for the squad members who substitute on," commented the coach. "Choices are taken and you must accept them as a player."
Bellingham has to learn. It was unnecessary for a tantrum. Harry Kane had only moments earlier made it the Three Lions leading by two in a dead rubber match, with only six minutes remaining and the player, after a below-par performance, had just been booked for fouling the Albanian striker. It was not a debatable decision. Indeed it might have been reckless for the manager to leave Bellingham on considering it was possible he would make himself ineligible of the first match of the competition by receiving a second caution.
Yet Bellingham made himself the center of attention. No one could overlook the young midfielder's disappointment as he realized that he was going to make way for a teammate. His arms went up in exasperation and even though he accepted the coach's hand while heading to the sideline there was no doubt that the manager did not appreciate it.
This represents the hurdle for Bellingham. He praised his teammate for providing the assist for Harry Kane to score the team's second, but his other actions was harmful to his cause. There was no chance complaining was going to change Tuchel’s mind. The coach has talked so much about honoring the team structure and the necessity of behaving correctly.
Bellingham, not included in the previous squad, is being watched carefully upon his return to the squad this month. Practically he has been on trial and he hasn't helped his case through his behavior to being taken off as the national team rounded off a perfect qualifying campaign by overcoming a tough opposition from their opponents.
As a result it's unclear on how the team perform optimally with Bellingham in the team. The evidence here was not definitive. Some new ideas were tested from the manager at the start. Under him, England have gained the team a clear system in recent months, using a defensive midfielder, a box-to-box player, a playmaker and out-and-out wingers, but the approach changed in this match. The young defender was made his England debut, Wharton started for the first time at this level and the role of John Stones as a part-time midfielder gave a faint echo to Manchester City’s 2023 treble winners.
Bellingham had ups and downs. He made a chance for his teammate after the break but at times seemed overly eager to shine. He made many poorly executed passes. A pointless clash with a rival player early on. The team looked disjointed for much of the second half. A scoring chance for the opponents resulted from Bellingham gave the ball away. His booking was shown after he lost the ball by Broja and fouled the former Chelsea striker.
Finally the bench quality made the difference. Tuchel introduced Foden, who looked better suited to the spot occupied by Bellingham during the first half, and Saka. Later Saka delivered a corner kick for Kane to break the deadlock. It was a reminder that set pieces will play a key role next summer.
Nevertheless, Bellingham was the story. The excellence of the winger's delivery for Kane's goal was partly forgotten amid the drama of the substitution incident. When the match concluded, everyone was watching the midfielder. Tuchel walked up from behind and pushed the Real Madrid midfielder to acknowledge the English fans. Their relationship is not broken. The coach isn't ready to abandon the player just yet. But if he is willing to offer him the central position is still uncertain.
