Anthony Barry Explains The Approach: Wearing England's Shirt Should Be Like a Cape, Not Armour.

In the past, the England assistant coach was playing at a lower division club. Today, his attention is fixed to assist Thomas Tuchel win the World Cup in 2026. His journey from player to coach commenced as an unpaid coach for Accrington's Under-16s. Barry reflects, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he was hooked. He discovered his purpose.

Rapid Rise

His advancement stands out. Commencing with his first major job, he built a standing through unique exercises and great man-management. His stints with teams led him to elite sides, while also serving in international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He's coached stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, it’s full-time, the peak according to him.

“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that passion overcomes challenges. You dream big then you break it down: ‘How do we do it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. It's essential to develop a systematic approach enabling us for optimal success.”

Focus on Minutiae

Dedication, particularly on fine points, is central to his philosophy. Working every hour under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, they both challenge limits. Their strategies include mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the finals abroad, and fostering teamwork. He stresses the national team spirit and rejects terms including "pause".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” Barry notes. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that returning to club duty feels easier.”

Greedy Coaches

He characterizes himself and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he declares. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and that's our focus most of our time to. We must not just to keep up of the trends and to lead and set new standards. It’s a constant process focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.

“We get 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We have to play a sophisticated style that offers a strategic upper hand and explain it thoroughly in that period. We need to progress from concept to details to knowledge to execution.

“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, it's crucial to employ the whole 500 we’ll have had after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, it's vital to develop bonds with each player. It's essential to invest time on the phone with them, observing them live, feel them, touch them. If we just use the 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Final Qualifiers

The coach is focusing for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and away to Albania. The team has secured qualification by winning all six games and six clean sheets. However, they won't relax; instead. This is the time to reinforce the team’s identity, for further momentum.

“The manager and I agree that the style of play ought to embody the best aspects from the top division,” Barry explains. “The physicality, the flexibility, the robustness, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It should feel like a cape not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a style that allows them to operate like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They should overthink less and more in doing.

“There are emotional wins for managers in the first and final thirds – starting moves deep, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information these days. They know how to set up – structured defenses. We are really trying to increase tempo through midfield.”

Passion for Progress

His desire for development is relentless. During his education for the top coaching badge, he felt anxious over the speaking requirement, especially as his class featured big names including former players. For self-improvement, he went into the most challenging environments imaginable to improve his talks. One was HMP Walton in Liverpool, and he trained detainees for a training session.

He completed the course with top honors, and his research paper – The Undervalued Set Piece, in which he examined thousands of throw-ins – became a published work. Lampard was among those convinced and he recruited the coach on to his staff at Chelsea. After Lampard's dismissal, it said plenty that the club got rid of virtually all of his coaches except Barry.

His replacement with the club took over, and shortly after, they claimed the Champions League. After Tuchel's exit, the coach continued with Potter. But when Tuchel re-emerged in Germany, he brought Barry over away from London to work together again. The Football Association view them as a partnership similar to Southgate and Holland.
